The house that grew in the middle

The families in the twin houses from 1870 on Svend Trøsts Vej were running out of space. Instead of moving, they built in the gap between the two buildings, and now both the houses and the street have new life.

The new extension gives the seven homes extra room, and its light grey Kolumba brick facade sits calmly beside its historic neighbours. Climbing plants grow up vertical rods along the front, so the building changes with the seasons. "We asked ourselves how we could join the houses in a way that was respectful to them," says architect Martin Krogh of ADEPT.
